The DJ & producer from Southside Atlanta

A note for Dusei: You’re such a gem. From everything I’ve seen on your Instagram, the humble spirit that you carry with you and how you interact with others, and also from just being at a concert myself in the crowd where you were the DJ. You truly know how to bring life to a crowd and that is an art all in itself. Thank you for being apart of this special segment for my website. Continue being great and I wish you all of the success.

Where were you born and where did you grow up?
Born and raised on the Southside of Atlanta, GA with family roots in Ghana. I am the first person in my family born in America.
When you were growing up did you always want to be a DJ? If not, what was your dream as a youngin’?
As a youngin’ I’ve always wanted to be a radio personality as well as a DJ. I’m proud and blessed to say that I’ve done both
What is your favorite childhood memory that involved music?
My favorite childhood memory involving music was crying for a 2 deck boom box that had a microphone attached so I could record songs from the radio and record my voice after the song goes off, like a radio personality.
What was the first song or mix you heard that made you fall in love with music?
Isley Brothers music. With my mom & dad being from Ghana, my dad would always say listening to Isley Brothers helped him learn English. He used to play them all the time and I was like man!!!! They jamming!!!
What inspired you to become a DJ? Where did your love and passion for music and bringing life to a crowd come from?
My dad initially inspired me to be a DJ because he used to DJ himself. My passion for music and bringing a crowd to life came from my pleasure of seeing everyone have a good time at an event or party.
What type of style do you think you’ve incorporated into your craft that derives from the places and/or people that raised you that sets you apart from others in this industry?
My style is energetic. I’m from Atlanta, home of crunk, bass, snap, futuristic, and trap music.
All energetic styles of music. DJ Wally Sparks, DJ Jelly, Mr. Collipark, JayTek and DJ Tripp are my favorite DJs and their styles are what shaped the way I DJ and my style.
Think back to your first gig as a DJ. Remember that adrenaline rush… those nerves… that excitement. Tell us about your first time out and what that was like for you.
My 1st gig was a birthday party for my friend Carnique back in 2012. Definitely was nervous but still rocked. Never let them see you sweat.
I remember watching your story and seeing a post from a wedding back in 2014. You said that wedding was where you got your Mojo. Enlighten us on that. What about that specific wedding was a turning point for you in your career?
That wedding was for my good friend Twaneisha. It was in Savannah, Ga. That wedding gave me my mojo because prior to that wedding I was still learning from mistakes I made at previous weddings. So with proper planning and confidence, I went into that wedding ready and everyone had the best time. Seeing the guest have a great time gives you the mojo moving forward for future events.
What was the most challenging thing you’ve faced so far in your career and how did you overcome that?
The most challenging thing I've faced in my career was equipment failure an hour before a wedding started. My amp caught on fire and my speaker was smoking. I had to use my resources and networking skills to reach out to a nearby DJ to rent equipment and setup before anybody noticed.
What are your thoughts on the direction in which music is going? Hip Hop specifically, and is there a change you’d like to see in the future?
The direction hip hop is going in is unique. Throughout the lifespan of hip hop, the present relevancy of hip hop is always determined by what the younger thinks. I would like to see the younger crowd actually listen to those artists who are slightly older than them. They would think that the music is dope.
Being a DJ is an art in itself. The ability to be able to create mixes that actually sound good to the crowd and get the people jumpin’ and hype from start to finish is a gift. Tell me what is the most rewarding part of what you do?
The crowd reaction is the most rewarding part of what I do. Hearing everybody go crazy from what you creating is the best feeling.
BIG KRIT’s official tour DJ. Wow. What an accomplishment Dusei. Explain how you got to the opportunity to have such a rewarding role doing what you love to do. What were your feelings when this became a reality for you and how do you feel being a tour DJ has changed your career and perspective on the industry?
Being a fan, hard work and being connected to the right people is how I got the opportunity to live out my dream. Krit’s former tour DJ’s Wally & Dibiase gave the King Remembered In Time the recommendation for me to be next up. Dutch reached out to me and my dream came true. The best feeling ever. Being a tour DJ for one of my favorite rappers is an honor. Learning how to maneuver through the industry and tour life from Dutch and Krit has been rewarding and life changing.
What is a difference (good or not so good) that you've noticed with being an event DJ and your experience as a tour DJ?
Being a tour DJ and an event DJ have similar experiences. The only difference I’ve experienced is something going wrong and having to think on the fly to correct it and keeping a cool face while doing it.
If you could sit down and have a conversation right now with any artist dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Lil Wayne. That’s been my favorite rapper since I was in elementary school. During our convo I would ask him to make more music with Krit. Lol
What are you most thankful for in your life right now?
I’m most thankful for my grind and the love and support from everyone around me.
Do you have any other passions/hobbies? If so what are they?
SNEAKERS!!!! Lol. I’m a real sneaker enthusiast. Have been since elementary school. Love all types of sneakers and the different companies.
What is the end all goal for your life personally and professionally? What will be the catalyst in your life that will make you say, damn, I have finally made it?
Professionally I've reached my end goal of being a DJ for a major artist. Now I want to maximize all the opportunities that come with it and be successful at it. Personally, I want my end goal to be that my family is taken care of and with my help, have opportunities to live out their dreams.
What is the best advice you can give anyone who is also passionate about music and possibly becoming a DJ?
Don’t quit. Network and actually put in the groundwork. Can’t be lazy and think success will be handed to you.
What is the ultimate message you are conveying for the people who love you and support you through your art?
My message is simple. They are the reason why I’m in this position. They are the reason I have the confidence to succeed.
Do you have any shout outs you want to give to any special people in your life?
My baby girl Madison. Daddy loves you!!!
